Database Description
The ESO Telescope Bibliography database contains refereed papers published by the ESO users' community. It is compiled by scanning the major astronomical journals for scientific papers based on data obtained with ESO telescopes. Lists derived from this database are printed as an Annex to the ESO Annual Report.

Note that the ESO Telescope Bibliography can also be queried through a filter at the NASA ADS from which active links are provided to the ESO Archive. Just follow the D-links ("On-line Data"). Unlike the ESO interface, however, ADS does not cater for queries limited to specific telescopes or instruments, only the entire database can be searched.

The following sections provide some help on how to use and what to enter for the various query parameters offered in the ESO Telescope Bibliography query form. Access is supplied through the WDB interface. If this is the first time you use this system, we recommend that you read the short WDB help page on how to specify queries and use operators to make full benefit of this system.
Bibliographic Information
The Bibliographic Information section offers queries based on the following criteria:
Author Author searches find all publications in the database by the same author. Diacritics like accents and Umlaute are best replaced by an asterisk (*). If more than one name is entered, please use the boolean operator OR, e.g., Smith OR Dupont.
Title Title words will be automatically combined by the operator and.
Journal and Volume Users can choose from a list of most frequently occurring journal abbreviations or accept the default value any. If a journal is not listed, this does not necessarily mean that the database does not contain any records from this journal. The search can be further limited by journal volume.
Publication Year Individual publication years as well as ranges are recognized. Start and end year of ranges have to be combined by two dots (e.g., 2000..2004). The ESO telescope bibliography starts in 1996.
Refereed / Unrefereed The vast majority of records contained in the bibliography originates from refereed journals, hence refereed is the default value. Only very few references from the early days were published in journals that may be regarded as unrefereed as they publish almost exclusively conference proceedings (mostly Astrophysics & Space Science and Astrophysical Letters and Communications).
Abstract (Toggle mode) - The associated checkbox determines whether or not the query result page will provide a link to the abstract of the article stored at the NASA Astrophysics Data System.
BibCode It allows searches for individual papers by bibliographic reference code, e.g., 2002APJ...566..667R.
Observation Information
In the Observation Information section, queries can be limited by specific observing facilities on three hierarchical levels: Site/Archive, Telescope(s) and Instrument(s).
Criteria are entered through pull-down menus.
Site / Archive It allows users to search all papers originating from one of the ESO observing sites (currently Paranal and La Silla) as well as those based on data obtained from the ESO Archive.
Telescope(s) It provides a list of telescopes currently available to the community, e.g., VLT, VLTI, 3.6m, NTT etc. In case a site was selected, the telescope must match that site.
Instrument(s) It provides a list of instruments currently available to the community, e.g., UVES, NACO, SOFI, TIMMI2. In case a site and/or telescope were selected, the instrument must match those selections. Instrument information for Paranal-based papers is available from 1999 onwards, for La Silla mostly from 2002 onwards.
Program ID(s) This text area allows searches based on ESO program IDs. Read the documentation on the ESO programme identification code.
Clicking a program ID in the query result list takes users into ESO's observing schedule. Principal investigator and co-investigator names, as well as the title of the proposal are given. As of October 2004, abstracts of proposals are made available from here once the proprietary period of the associated data has expired. In addition, links to raw and possibly reduced data as well as to other publications related to this program are provided.
Display Options
The total number of hits is given at the bottom of the query result page.
Output Columns The number of output columns may vary depending on the parameters for which the checkboxes on the query page were marked. An additional Author column will always show the first author or, in the case of author queries, the name searched for. In case no information regarding observing facilities is displayed, go back to the initial search screen and make sure that not only the small box in front of Instrument(s) (which is selected by default) but also the ones preceding Telescope(s) and/or Site/Archive are checked. This will open additional columns on the result page with information about the observing facilities.
Paper ID If you are in tabular mode and you wish to display the full individual record display of a matching source, click on the appropriate Paper ID in the query result page.
Tabular Mode By default, if more than one record is retrieved, results will be displayed in HTML tabular format, one matching record per line. To force the tabular mode if only one record is retrieved, mark the checkbox in the Display Options section of the search screen.
Full-Screen Mode If only one record is retrieved, or if you mark this checkbox in the Display Options section of the search screen, the results of your query will give you the full individual record display, regardless of the selected toggle parameters on the search screen.
Export File To export the results of your query to an ascii file, you have to mark the checkbox in the Display Options section of the search screen and to select the field separator from the pull-down menu.
The Export File option requires the tabular mode to be turned on.
If you are in Export File mode, hyperlinks towards external databases (e.g. Program ID) will be turned off in the HTML result table.
Currently available export formats are:
  • Tab-Separated-Values (TSV format)
  • |-Separated-Values
  • Comma-Separated-Values
The following sentence will display at the bottom of the query result page:

Download query results from: exportNUMBER (format)

To download the export file, right-click (Save Link Target as...) on exportNUMBER.
